The Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly conducted an exercise to evacuate refuse accumulated in communal container sites in Akoon, Nigeria, on November 26, 2024. The exercise involved pay-loader and sex (6) tipper trucks, which transported 250 tons of refuse to the final disposal site at Aboso. Challenges included the presence of human excreta in the refuse, lack of vehicles for supervision, the long distance to the final disposal site, and traffic congestion.
Recommendations included encouraging the construction of household latrines, promoting household waste packaging before storage in refuse containers, rehabilitating the refuse bay, making a final disposal site available, and ensuring regular lifting by Zoomlion Ghana Ltd to avoid refuse spillover. Despite the challenges and the fact that all refuse was not evacuated, the exercise was successful. To prevent future piled-up refuse, these recommendations must be considered. The exercise was captured in pictures before, during, and after the exercise.
