The Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly, on Monday 18th September 2023, held another edition of the Municipal Chief Executive’s (MCE) Meet the Press Series at Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly Conference Room – Ahwetieso.
The purpose of the event was to update the media on the YaWEP Programme and also give an account on the state of Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, the achievements and challenges in accordance with the Assembly’s mandate and commitments to make governance more open, transparent and inclusive.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly, Hon. Benjamin Kessie began his address by commending the media for their support and the constructive nature in which criticisms are advanced to promote the achievement of goals and objectives of the Assembly.
He again commended the Traditional Authorities, Civil Society Organizations, Non-Governmental Agencies, Corporate Bodies, and all other stakeholders for their collaborative efforts. He emphasized the strong ties the Assembly have with some key institutions such as GIZ, Friends of the Nation, Goldfields Ghana Limited, Ghana Manganese Company, and AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine Limited in mobilizing support towards the achievement of its developmental initiatives.
He took advantage of the occasion to re-echo the vision of the Assembly, thus “to become a World Class Model Municipality providing excellent socio-economic services for its inhabitants”, which he stated has been the driving force in promoting participatory development.
In pursuit of the vision, he highlighted status of implementation of the 2023 Annual Action Plan, he mentioned that the Assembly has strategically implemented various projects across every sector of the municipality. He said as of the end of the second quarter 2023, a total of 92 activities representing 62.59% of the total 147 planned projects and programmes have been implemented across all sectors.
In the Education sector, the Hon. Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) enumerated several projects that were currently under construction, and further indicated that the Assembly is preparing to hand over 2 School Projects to the GES for use.
He used the opportunity to emphasize on the Youth Entrepreneurship and Women Empowerment Program (YaWEP) which aims to use 10% of the Minerals Development Fund to equip the youth, women, and persons living with disability with technical skills, startup tools, and a considerable amount of capital to commence their businesses and generate income to support their families. He stated that a total amount of GHC 1,000,000 from the Mineral Development fund has been allocated and about 500 applications have been received by the Assembly to be shortlisted for implementation in the year 2024.
The Hon. Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) pleasantly announced that the Assembly’s commitment to good governance and service delivery through the YaWEP programme has yielded a global recognition. He said the Municipal Assembly participated in the 8th OGP Summit held in Estonia where the Assembly won an Award, for OGP Local, Africa, and Middle East region category.
The Honorable MCE concluded by commending Management, Assembly members and the hardworking staff for their dedication to duty and for the accomplishments of the Municipality.
He pledged that, he with the support of all will not relent on his effort to ensure effective participation of all stakeholders in local governance.
The media was full of praise for the MCE and Management of the Assembly for the milestone achieved and bringing the Municipality to the limelight through the Open Government Programme.
