TRAINING OF THE BLIND ON HOW TO VOTE

The Department initiated a training initiative to equip visually impaired individuals with the knowledge and skills to use tactile ballots. The aim was to promote the blind’s inclusion in decision-making processes and active participation in governance. The training was conducted in collaboration with advocacy groups, electoral commission representatives, and governance experts. Key activities included awareness sessions, hands-on practice, sensitivity on electoral rights, and feedback sessions. The training successfully achieved its objectives, resulting in increased confidence in using tactile ballots, increased awareness of electoral rights among the visually impaired, and fostered dialogue between electoral bodies and advocacy groups.
Challenges included limited availability of tactile ballot materials, accessibility issues, and initial skepticism about the effectiveness of tactile voting. Recommendations include expanding training to rural areas, increasing funding for tactile ballot production and distribution, and conducting periodic refresher training sessions.
