In order to ensure monitoring the observance of environmental standards within the municipality, the Environmental Health Unit undertook education on noise pollution and control, smoke nuisance and illegal mining on radio programmes. During routine premises inspection (house to house inspection) officers identified smoke nuisance issues in Tarkwa behind Trinity hotel and together with EPA collected samples for laboratory analysis. Subsequently, the Gold smelters were directed to stop the smelting activity at the said location. Environmental health officers (field officers) include in their house to house education the need to stop reclamation of low lying areas for construction of buildings. Indigenes were also educated on the fact that such low lying areas are to serve as buffer for runoff waters to prevent flooding. The radio programmes also emphasized the need for household toilet construction to improve sanitation.
