DREDGING OF DRAIN AT ZONGO

The Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit conducted a dredging exercise on 26th April 2024 to improve sanitary conditions in the municipality. The exercise involved removing filth and silt from a stream near Zongo Railway Quarters, aiming to prevent flooding during the rainy season. The dredging process involved mechanical and manual methods, with the dredged materials being transported and disposed off at designated sites. The results showed a reduction in silt and debris, improved water flow rate, and significant siltation, debris, and refuse accumulation in the drains. The unit recommended scheduling regular dredging exercises, upgrading drain infrastructure, and enhancing community involvement and education on drain maintenance. The exercise successfully removed silt and debris from storm water drains, improving water flow and reducing flood risk. Regular maintenance, community engagement, and infrastructure upgrades are crucial for the long-term effectiveness of the storm water drainage system.
