The Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive development, infrastructure improvement, and effective local governance during its 9th General Assembly Meeting, where members reviewed ongoing projects, approved key resolutions, and outlined strategic priorities for 2027.
Promoting Inclusivity and Community Development
As part of efforts to improve the welfare of vulnerable groups, the Assembly approved financial support for seventeen (17) Persons Living with Disabilities to assist with educational expenses and business development. The initiative forms part of the Assembly’s broader commitment to social inclusion and economic empowerment.
Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ebenezer Cobbinah, informed the House that he has commenced a community visitation exercise across the municipality’s electoral areas to assess developmental needs firsthand. He called on Assembly Members to actively mobilize residents and ensure that priority community concerns are captured to guide development planning and resource allocation.
On local governance, the Assembly reported that all Urban and Zonal Councils are operational except the Benso Zonal Council, which is yet to be inaugurated. The Nsuaem Zonal Council also remains without a chairman. The Assembly assured members that steps are being taken to address these challenges to further strengthen grassroots participation and decentralized governance.
Road Infrastructure Receives Major Boost
The Assembly highlighted significant progress in road maintenance under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP). Through the Department of Urban Roads, approximately 20 kilometres of roads have been reshaped and maintained across several communities, including Simpa, Nsuaem, New Atuabo, Cyanide, Bonsa-Benso Road, Wassa Agona, Bogrekrom, Ahwetieso, and Boboobo.
The Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Hon. Issah Salifu Taylor, also reiterated government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure within the municipality. He announced that construction of selected inner roads is expected to commence soon, with the sod-cutting ceremony to be performed by the President of the Republic.
In a significant development, Assembly Members unanimously passed a resolution supporting the construction of a bypass road from UMaT Basic School (UBaSS) through the Railway Station to improve traffic flow and accessibility within the municipality.
Progress on Ongoing Development Projects
The Assembly received updates on several projects being funded through the Internally Generated Fund (IGF), District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), and the Municipal Development Fund (MDF).
Current progress levels include:
Health Sector
- Construction of Health Centre at Amantin – 35% complete
- Construction of CHPS Compound at Kenyanko – 45% complete
Education Sector
- 6-Unit Classroom Block at Esuaso – 30% complete
- 3-Unit Classroom Block at Nuakokrom – 30% complete
- K.G. Block at Tetrem Nyamebekyere – 30% complete
- 6-Unit Classroom Block at Dompim – 60% complete
Security Sector
- Police Post at Adieyie – 25% complete
Executive Committee Recommends Key Priorities for 2027
The Executive Committee, at its meeting held on 28th May 2026, submitted eight key recommendations for consideration and implementation in the 2027 fiscal year.
The recommendations include:
- Incorporation of landscaping works at the Bogrekrom School lands to address flooding challenges.
- Standardization of community-initiated projects through mandatory consultation with the Assembly before implementation.
- Procurement of a mini-bus by 31st July 2026 to enhance revenue mobilization activities.
- Introduction of an electronic payment system for the collection of daily market tolls.
- Renovation of the former Community Development Department building into a shelter facility for rescued and vulnerable youth by November 2026.
- Establishment of an award scheme to recognize the cleanest Zonal Council and promote sanitation.
- Provision of toilet and urinal facilities for Wassa Agona Junior High School under the 2027 budget.
- Acquisition of land outside the Tarkwa township to facilitate the establishment of satellite market centres in Ahwetieso, Bonsa, Wassa Agona, and Dompim as part of efforts to reduce congestion within the municipality.
