The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Benjamin Kessie, on Wednesday 25th August 2021, officially commissioned the newly constructed Wood Seller’s Village at Essamang Kakraba.
In a brief address, the Hon MCE stated that the new facility was constructed as a result of the congestion and inconveniences caused by the operations of the wood sellers at their former location at Karikwano. He explained that the operations posed a great threat to emergency response and management as it obstructed the free flow of traffic to the New Government Hospital. The market was also disorganized and sited within a residential area which posed great environmental and health hazards to inhabitants due to dust emissions.
The new wood seller’s market is made up of 30 open sheds for board sellers, 30 Open Sheds for Carpenters, 4 Open sheds for sprayers and 15 Lockable shops for Machine Operators.
Other ancillary facilities attached to the market include a toilet facility, a urinal, a mechanized borehole and a refuse bay for waste management. The Assembly also procured a dedicated transformer for the project, as well as ensuring the wiring and provision of meters to all the machine shops within the project. Last but not least, the Assembly constructed speed bumps to reduce speeding vehicles on the highway to ensure the safety of the wood operators and other road users.
In his closing remarks, the Hon. MCE expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Chiefs and Elders of Essamang Kakraba for providing the Assembly with the land for the project. The Hon. MCE also urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the facility and make its maintenance a priority.
The executives of the wood seller’s association expressed their profound gratitude to the Hon. MCE and the Assembly for the project and promised to take good care of it to ensure its sustainability.
